A fully optimised Google Business Profile has the correct primary category, 15+ recent photos, complete services and hours, weekly posts, a seeded Q&A section, and a steady flow of replied-to reviews. Work through the checklist below in order; the first five items produce most of the ranking movement. For professional help, explore our digital marketing solutions.
Your profile outranks your website locally
For a shop in Thrissur, a clinic in Kozhikode or a contractor in Kochi, the Google Business Profile is the storefront. It decides whether you appear in the map pack, and for most local businesses in Kerala it generates more calls than the website does.
It is also free, takes an afternoon to fix properly, and roughly nine out of ten profiles we audit have gaps in the first five items on this list. (Learn more in our Local SEO Guide for Calicut).
Part 1: the five things that move ranking most
Do these before anything else.
1. Primary category
One choice, enormous impact. "Dentist" and "Dental clinic" surface for different queries. "Building contractor" and "General contractor" are not the same. Search your main keyword, note the primary category used by the businesses in the top three (visible in their profile schema or via a category tool), and choose accordingly. Add secondary categories only where genuinely accurate.
2. Business name, exactly as it is
Use your real trading name. "Best Dental Clinic Kozhikode | Dr. X Dental Care" invites a suspension, and competitors do report. The ranking gain is temporary; a suspension costs weeks.
3. Complete NAP, matched to your website
Address, landmark, pincode and phone must match your website footer and contact page character for character. Use a local number as the primary and a mobile as secondary. Inconsistent NAP is the most common hidden blocker in Kerala local SEO.
4. Services and products with descriptions
List every service individually — not one line item called "Services". For a clinic: root canal, braces, implants, whitening, paediatric dentistry. Add a 200–300 character description to each, using the words patients and customers actually type.
5. Reviews, recent and answered
Aim for 4–8 new reviews a month and reply to all of them within 48 hours. In your reply, name the service and the town: "Thank you for trusting our Kozhikode clinic with your root canal treatment." Never buy reviews.
Part 2: the completeness checklist
A quick overview of what a complete profile includes:
- Verification: Verified by video, postcard or phone
- Categories: 1 primary + relevant secondaries
- Hours: Regular + holiday hours (Onam, Vishu, Eid, Christmas)
- Phone: Local landline primary, mobile secondary
- Website link: Homepage or best-matching service page
- Appointment link: Booking or WhatsApp link
- Description: 750 characters, services + location
- Attributes: Wheelchair access, parking, UPI/card payments, women-led, AC
- Photos: 15+ across exterior, interior, team, work, products
- Videos: 2–3 short clips, under 30 seconds
- Products: Priced items for shops
- Posts: Weekly
- Q&A: 8–10 seeded and answered questions
- Messaging: On, with a response time under 24 hours
Part 3: by business type
Shops and showrooms
Use the Products section with real prices — it renders in search and drives comparison clicks. Photograph shelves, the shopfront with signage visible, and bestsellers. Set attributes for parking, UPI and card payments. Post seasonal offers weekly during Onam and wedding seasons.
Clinics and hospitals
List each treatment as a separate service. Add doctor profiles with qualifications to your website and link them from the profile. Enable appointment links. Handle reviews carefully — never discuss a patient's specifics in a public reply, and keep responses brief and professional. Add attributes for wheelchair access and on-site parking.
Contractors and service businesses
Set up as a service-area business, listing the districts and towns you genuinely cover. Photograph completed projects with before-and-after pairs. Add your licence or registration details to the website and reference them in your description. Keep response time fast — contractor enquiries go to whoever answers first.
Part 4: what gets profiles suspended
We've seen all of these cost Kerala businesses their listing:
- Keywords crammed into the business name
- A virtual office or coworking address with no staffed presence
- Multiple listings at one address for one business
- A category unrelated to the actual business
- Sudden clusters of five-star reviews from new accounts
- Editing address, name and category all on the same day
If you're suspended, don't create a second listing. File a reinstatement request with proof of address — utility bill, GST registration, signage photo, trade licence — and wait. A second listing makes recovery harder.
Part 5: the monthly routine
Thirty minutes a month keeps a profile competitive:
- Publish four posts — one a week.
- Add three to five new photos.
- Reply to every review and message.
- Answer any new customer question, and seed one of your own.
- Check insights: calls, direction requests, website clicks, search terms.
- Verify hours for the coming month's festivals and holidays.
The search-terms report in insights is the most underused data in local SEO. It shows the exact phrases people used to find you — turn the recurring ones into services, posts and website pages.
Frequently asked questions
How do I optimise my Google Business Profile in Kerala?
Verify the listing, choose the correct primary category, complete NAP, hours, services and attributes, upload 15+ photos, post weekly, seed the Q&A section, and collect four to eight replied-to reviews each month.
How long does it take to see results from GBP optimisation?
Profile completeness changes can show within two to four weeks. Review-driven and category-driven gains typically build over eight to twelve weeks.
Do photos affect Google Maps ranking?
Photos strongly affect engagement — clicks, calls and direction requests — which feeds prominence. Recency and quantity matter more than geotagging.
Can I have two Google listings for one business?
Only for genuinely separate locations or distinct legal entities at different addresses. Duplicates for the same business risk suspension.
Should I put keywords in my business name?
No. It violates Google's guidelines and is the most common cause of suspension in competitive Indian local markets.
How many reviews do I need to rank in the map pack?
Enough to compete with the current top three in your area, and then a consistent monthly flow. Steady beats sudden.
